Peter Fortunate Vallone Jr was born in the United States on March 23, 1961.
From 2002 until 2013, Vallone served on the New York City Council as a representative for the 22nd district, which includes Astoria, Queens, and the adjacent areas. The Public Safety Committee of the Council was presided over by Vallone.
The former City Council Speaker Peter Vallone Sr. and his wife Tena are the parents of Vallone. He is also the grandson of Queens County Civil Court Judge Charles J. Vallone.
In 1983, he earned his degree from Fordham University, and in 1986, he earned his law degree from Fordham University.
Vallone spent six years as an assistant to the Manhattan district attorney prior to being chosen for the City Council.
He has received awards from the League of Humane Voters, the Immaculate Conception Youth Program, the Council of Senior Centers and Services of New York City, and other groups.
Based on his extensive history of advocating for animals, Vallone Jr. was designated one of America’s Top Ten Animal Defenders by the Animal Legal Defense Fund in February 2014.
Vallone fought for Astoria residents and C.H.O.K.E. (Coalition Helping Organize a Kleaner Environment) in court against the New York Power Authority, and his success resulted in the Charles Poletti Power Plant’s closure in 2010.
Additionally, Vallone is against fluoridating New York’s water.
Pit bulls, Dobermans, Rottweilers, and other dogs weighing more than 25 lbs. were proposed to be banned from NYC public housing in April 2009, and Vallone backed the idea.

Vallone ran for Queen’s borough president in 2013, but Melinda Katz defeated him in the September 10 primary. In a four-way race, he finished second with 37,132 votes, or 33.7%, trailing Katz by 48,975 votes, or 44.5%. Vallone was replaced on the city council by Costa Constantinides on January 1st, 2014, after reaching the end of his term.
Vallone was appointed as a Criminal Court judge in Queens in 2015[8] and took the oath of office in January 2016.
Vallone, a co-captain of the Astoria Civic City Champion Football and Softball teams, was invited to compete against the Chinese National Ping-Pong team on ABC’s Wide World of Sports. Vallone is a practicing Catholic as well.
He had two children, Catherine (Casey) and Caroline, after divorcing Kristen Anne Canberg from whom he had been married. In 2013, his brother Paul Vallone won a seat on the city council for the 19th district.
About The Scholarship
The Peter F. Vallone Academic Scholarship, formerly the New York City Council Merit Scholarship, honors high school graduates from New York City who have demonstrated their capacity for academic success while they were still in high school. The maximum annual stipend for students is $700 ($350 per semester). The Scholarship award amount is subject to change based on an allocation given each academic year, and funding is decided by the New York City Council. No more recipients may receive an award once a college has used up all of its allotment.
Form of Application
The scholarship is not available through a separate application. When students apply for admission to CUNY, they are automatically considered for the award.
Eligibility
To be eligible, you must:
• Have U.S. citizenship or be a qualified non-citizen
• Call New York City home.
• Complete high school in New York City with a minimum GPA of 80(B).
• Enroll as a full-time student at a CUNY college within a year of high school graduation.
• Enroll as a full-time student during every semester (aside from the summer) and keep a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
• Prior to enrolling in any other postsecondary institution, choose CUNY.
Progress and Pursuit
• You must continue to enroll in the City University of New York system full-time (12 credits).
• You must keep your cumulative GPA, which is determined once a year at the conclusion of the Spring semester, at least 3.0.
Additional Information
The Peter F. Vallone Academic Scholarship is available to associate’s degree candidates for a maximum of six semesters. There are only eight semesters that people who want to get a bachelor’s degree are eligible for.
• Once it has been forfeited, the award cannot be recovered.
