The Canton Audubon Society is happy to provide scholarships to outstanding college students at all academic levels, up to and including graduate study. Ashland, Carroll, Columbiana, Coshocton, Guernsey, Harrison, Holmes, Medina, Muskingham, Portage, Stark, Summit, Tuscarawas, or Wayne counties in Ohio must be the place where students live or attend college. ARNOLD W. FRITZ
The Arnold W. Fritz Scholarship replaced the Canton Audubon Scholarship as of September 2012. To honor Arnold Fritz, who passed away on August 14, 2011, this name change has been made. Arnold served as the first president of our organization (1962–1964) as well as The Wilderness Center in Wilmot. He was a biology instructor at Malone University in Canton until he retired (1961-1998).
GUIDELINES FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP AND ITS GOALS
The Arnold W. Fritz Scholarship was created to motivate college students to pursue studies in environmental science, conservation, natural history, and nature-related fields, including environmental law, by providing financial aid. The basis for the Scholarship Award:
1. A combination of the following criteria will be used by the selection committee to determine whether to award the scholarship:

3. A typed essay of no more than 250 words in which you introduce yourself and discuss your plans to improve the environment.
The grade point average is 4. (2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale) 5. Three recommendation letters 6. Prior experiences demonstrating a commitment to environmental protection

APPLICATION GUIDELINE
1. All information must be typed or carefully printed in blue or black ink, with a font size of 12 or bigger. A difficult-to-read application will probably be rejected.
2. The candidate must live in one of the following counties: Carroll, Coshocton, Stark, Tuscarawas, Wayne, or any neighboring county, or be enrolled in college there.
3. At the time of the grant, the applicant must be beginning the fall semester as a Junior level or higher at an authorized college or university.
4. The applicant must meet the requirements of the university as a full-time student.
5. The applicant may major in any subject that is relevant to our goal.
6. Each year, only one family member will be taken into consideration.
7. There won’t be an age restriction.
8. The postmark deadline for the completed application, references, essay, and transcript is March 1.
TRANSCRIPT
1. The Canton Audubon Society requires an official college transcript to be included with the application.
2. The candidate must be a full-time student with a grade point average of at least 2.5. (On a scale of 4.0)
REFERENCES
1. Three references must be provided by each applicant.
2. At least two of these references need to be professors. One of these professors needs to be an expert in the applicant’s major subject.
3. The selection committee must obtain from each of these references a letter of recommendation and a copy of the Recommendation Form by the deadline. The process for awarding the
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Each committee member will evaluate applications using a numerical scoring methodology.
2. By March 31st, committee members must turn in their individual evaluations of each applicant to the committee chairperson. To choose the best application, the committee may or may not discuss the merits of each candidate collectively.
3. By May 15, all applicants will know whether they were selected or not.
4. The scholarship reward will be paid to the student once they provide documentation of their registration and tuition payment.
5. The scholarship will be given out for a year. If a student wants to be eligible for a scholarship the next year, they must reapply.
6. No scholarships will be given out that year if the committee determines that no applicants fit our requirements and would be deserving of receiving them, and the funds will be set aside for the next year.
