Elizabeth Lealtad Every year, a qualified minority student receives a scholarship named in honor of Catharine Lealtad, Macalester’s first African American graduate who received her degree in 1915.
Lealtad was a formidable and intelligent woman who dedicated her life to advancing racial, gender, and social justice.
She played a significant role in Macalester’s history.
ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP
For each year you enroll at Macalester, you are eligible to renew your Lealtad Scholarship, but only if you are making adequate progress toward graduation.
The scholar must continue to succeed academically even if there is no minimum GPA requirement for renewal. The number of prizes and prize money vary, but they can even top $72,000!
The duration of each Macalester merit scholarship is eight semesters.
WHO IS QUALIFIED?
Selected African American, Latino, and Native American students with excellent high school records who choose to pursue advanced aspirations in education are given scholarships.
This scholarship, which is given to accepted students at Macalester, is not need-based.
You must be a citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States to be eligible.
The candidate cannot be a transfer pupil.
A merit-based scholarship was awarded to half of the Macalester students.
Once the application process begins, you are strongly encouraged to submit an application if you think this scholarship is the best fit for you and that you have a possibility of receiving it.
HOW TO APPLY
The selection of awardees is the responsibility of the Admissions committee; unlike other scholarships, there is no specific application to complete.
Early Decision applicants will receive the same consideration for merit-based scholarships as Regular Decision applicants.
The admissions office will notify you if you are the fortunate student chosen for merit-based scholarships at the same time you are informed of your admission.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Scholarships awarded based on merit are given consideration to all candidates. There is no need to submit a separate scholarship application.
To be given full consideration for merit-based scholarships, you do not have to apply for need-based financial aid (no FAFSA or CSS Profile required). Early Decision applicants are given the same weight in the consideration process for merit-based scholarships as Regular Decision applicants.
The Admissions Office notifies students who have been chosen for merit-based scholarships at the same time they are informed of their admission. There are no further rewards given by Macalester after acceptance; all merit scholarships are awarded at the time of admission.
The duration of each Macalester merit scholarship is eight semesters. No minimum GPA is necessary for renewal.
National Merit Finalists who have listed Macalester as their top college option may also be eligible for Macalester College National Merit Scholarships.
