THE KINGS COLLEGE
One of the nine academic programs offered by King’s College London, which is a division of the federal University of London, is the Dickson Poon School of Law. In the center of London’s legal district, near the Royal Courts of Justice and the four Inns of Court, it is located on the Strand in Somerset House’s East Wing. It presently has a spot among the top 15 law schools worldwide and is ranked sixth in both Europe and the UK.
The school was renamed in Dickson Poon’s honor after he gave a £20 million grant in 2012.
Since 1831, King’s College London has offered legal education. It was initially covered in the Senior Department curriculum. Due to the necessity for a more differentiated curriculum for King’s Senior Department students, teaching was moved to the Department of General Literature and Science in 1839. Law was added to a wide range of topics and seminars that provide a foundational liberal arts and sciences curriculum to all King’s students. The Division of Laws and Economics within the Faculty of Arts was named beginning in 1893.
In 2012, the school received its current name in honor of Sir Dickson Poon, a businessman from Hong Kong who donated £20 million to the institution. It was allegedly the biggest gift ever made to a British or European law school at the time.
The institution is located in the city’s legal district. Before, it was discovered amid a group of structures close to the Strand and Embankment along the River Thames. On December 7, 2009, it was revealed that the school would move to Somerset House’s East Wing, a notable example of neo-classical architecture built there on the site of an earlier Tudor castle and constructed by Sir William Chambers in the late eighteenth century. It is said that it took almost 180 years to negotiate the new lease. The college’s patron, Queen Elizabeth II, unveiled the renovated East Wing in February 2012.
