Scholarships are created by donors who value education for various reasons, including to honor or remember a loved one, to motivate students to pursue particular careers, to support study in a specific institution, and to fill educational gaps for students in need. $500 to $5,000 worth of scholarships is available through ETCF. Scholarships can be used for housing and board, books and supplies, tuition, and fees. The college or university is the recipient of all payments.
SCHOLARSHIP SPONSOR
EAST TEXAS COMMUNITY FOUNDATION
Visionary visionaries who recognized the need for a community foundation to assist the people and communities of East Texas formed the East Texas Communities Foundation in 1989. The Foundation has been established thanks to the steadfast leadership of early organizers including Isadore Roosth, Norman Shtofman, and “Dub” Riter as well as a contribution from the United Way of Tyler/Smith County. The Foundation’s assets reached a value of $1,000,000 by 1994.
The Foundation’s Board of Directors took a significant step toward ensuring its continued success in 1997 by agreeing to each make a three-year financial commitment on their own dime to enable the Foundation to recruit a full-time executive director.
With permanent employees and the ongoing vision, vigor, and direction of a strong Board of Directors, ETCF has seen significant annual growth over the past ten years. Positive long-term growth trends have been documented in the number of charitable funds, the total assets held by those funds, and the amount of grant money awarded from those funds. The success of ETCF is a result of shrewd financial management, capable leadership, the adaptability of our donor services, and, most importantly, the wisdom and generosity of the residents of East Texas.
We are compassionate people, and it is essential to our daily lives that we support the charitable needs of our towns, our area, and our world.
ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP
To support students in their academic endeavors, the East Texas Communities Foundation offers a number of scholarships that have been established by kind people. Each scholarship demonstrates a strong faith in the ability of education to support young people in realizing their aspirations.
Scholarships from the East Texas Communities Foundation are given out according to donor-established standards in a competitive process. Financial necessity, the institution the applicants are attending, academic accomplishment, as well as personal or professional ambitions, could all be included in the selection process. Each scholarship choice made by ETCF is subject to a stringent internal screening process, and each application is carefully examined
APPLICATION PROCESS
One basic application from the East Texas Communities Foundation uses a matching mechanism that uses a series of inquiries to match you with all the scholarships you are eligible for (students majoring in visual arts, art history, music, music education, theater or dance should also use the Arts Matching Tool in addition to the General Matching Tool). After being “matched,” you must read the scholarship details, confirm that you qualify for the award, and finish the general application.
The application just needs to be completed once, and all the scholarships you are eligible for are already pre-populated. You will be taken to those areas on the specific application if an application requires uploading additional materials (FASFA, acceptance letter, etc.) or has an additional essay.

To access the general matching tool, check out the scholarships you qualify for, and create a login ID and password, click the Apply Now button. Although it is faster to complete the first process on a Chromebook or computer, it can also be done on a mobile device and takes about 10-15 minutes.
There are a few non-traditional scholarships offered by ETCF that are apart from your standard application and matching mechanism. The Sherilyn A. Willis, MD Medical School Scholarship is only available to Texas residents who have been accepted or are currently enrolled in medical school there. The application deadline is February 1.
Along with the application, you must also submit the following paperwork: (look for the blue cloud throughout the application that indicates something needs to be uploaded).
• Two reference letters must be submitted with the application. One of them needs to be from a teacher who can comment on your demeanor or conduct in the classroom. If you do not have at least one reference from a current or previous teacher, your application will be invalidated and not taken into consideration.
• If applicable, a copy of your ACT or SAT scorecard (found in Section 5. High School Academic Information)
• A copy of your high school transcript, which should include your autumn senior year grades (found in Section 5. High School Academic Information)
• A duplicate of your college transcript, if any (found in Section 6. College Academic Information)
• A copy of your FASFA that includes, if appropriate, your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) (found in Section 13. Financial Information) Your application will be rejected if the scholarship is deemed a “need-based scholarship” and a FASFA is omitted from it.
