The Mitchell Institute joyfully marked 25 years of supporting Scholars—and subsequently, their communities in 2020. Maine’s ongoing efforts to assure a better, more promising future are made more apparent through COVID-19.
SCHOLARSHIP SPONSORS
MITCHELL INSTITUTE
The founding principle of the Mitchell Institute, which states that no Maine student should be denied the chance to pursue a college degree because of a lack of financial means, is just as crucial now as it was back when Senator Mitchell founded the Institute. The Mitchell Institute has supported deserving students from all of Maine’s communities financially since its founding.
We have discovered that hard work and financial help alone are not sufficient for a college student’s success, as supported by both experience and evidence-based study. The likelihood that Scholars will graduate with a degree and land a job in Maine increases with more help and direction—both during and after college. The Mitchell Institute provides Mitchell Scholars with a variety of resources and initiatives that promote collaboration with each Scholar at every stage of the process, enabling us to reach out to them and assist them where they are. Today, Scholars and Alumni agree that receiving both financial and in-person support has a significant positive impact on their lives and those of their families. Our data also demonstrates that the more we work with a given Scholar, the more likely it is that they will complete their post-secondary education on schedule.
The Mitchell Institute’s strategy is effective: as opposed to 58% of students nationwide, 85% of Mitchell Scholars graduate from college with a degree. Nearly two-thirds of Mitchell Scholar Alumni are employed in Maine, where 89% of them are in career-related professions, and 40% have earned or are working toward graduate degrees.
GEORGE J. MITCHELL
Maine’s Waterville is where Senator George J. Mitchell was born and raised. He is a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center, Bowdoin College, and Waterville High School. In Maine, Senator Mitchell held the positions of both district court judge and US attorney. He was appointed from Maine to the Senate in 1980 to finish the term of Senator Edmund S. Muskie, who left his position to become Secretary of State. He was re-elected to the Senate in 1988 after being first elected to a full term in 1982. After serving as Senate Majority Leader since January 1989, he left the Senate in 1995.
The Northern Ireland Peace Talks were presided over by Senator Mitchell. Under his direction, the political parties in Northern Ireland, the governments of Ireland and the United Kingdom, and the historic Good Friday peace treaty were all reached. Senator Mitchell presided over an international fact-finding committee on Middle Eastern violence at President Bill Clinton’s request. The Mitchell Report, or the committee’s suggestion, was accepted by the Bush administration, the European Union, as well as many other nations. Senator Mitchell was chosen by President Obama to serve as the Middle East Special Envoy in 2009.
