Mr. Geon Yong Kim
Mr. Geon Yong Kim (1922-2009), a pioneering Korean immigrant to the United States, founded the Kimbo Foundation in June 1987. (1957). His love for God and the Korean community, together with his profession as a teacher in Korea, led him to found The Kimbo Foundation, a nonprofit public benefit corporation. Both in Korea and the US, he had endured many trying times in his life. He learned how to enjoy the prizes he received after his arduous work because of his rough past. He had a tremendous desire to invest his hard-earned money in the Korean community in the US, particularly in the Korean students who would fulfill American goals.
About The Scholarship
In the first year of 1988, the foundation gave 5 students scholarships totaling $5000.00. since that time, the scholarship has consistently increased year after year. 3,676 students will have received awards by the year 2023, and a total of $6,229,000 has been contributed to the scholarship. during the financial crisis, the foundation gave scholarships to students in South Korea. Additionally, from 2001 to 2008, the foundation supported 10 Korean-Chinese students annually in china. Since 2013, the foundation has been giving black and Hispanic students scholarships to improve racial harmony. The foundation is one of the biggest and older scholarship foundations for the Korean community in the United States.
All of the scholarship events were hosted by Korea daily in San Francisco until 1998. Along with the Korea daily in San Francisco, Korea daily in Los Angeles began hosting scholarship events for students in southern California in the year 1999. a qualified judge was chosen from the Korean community. Starting in 2008, the Kimbo scholarship provides national coverage through the 6 offices of Korea daily, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Atlanta, and Washington, d.c. this expanded coverage aims to identify students around the nation who exhibit outstanding academic accomplishments and who are in need of financial assistance.
