The New Haven Scholarship Program

“A quality education is crucial because it promotes global peace. People who have received a proper education use their knowledge, insight, understanding, and high ideals to better their family’s needs and, beyond that, to cultivate the justice that, by itself, can bring about “Peace on earth, goodwill to men.

Scholarship Sponsor

New Haven

Jean Paton Lovell established the New Haven Scholarship Fund in 1959. (1894-1996). James Hillhouse High School math teacher Jean Lovell noted that numerous of her pupils had exceptional academic aptitude but lacked the resources to continue their education. In the first year, Jean gave eight $100 scholarships after collecting $400 from friends and matching it with another $400. Today, Mrs. Lovell’s vision is carried out by the all-volunteer Board of Directors, several of whom were themselves NHSF scholarship recipients.

Our Purpose

The New Haven Scholarship Fund has given more than $9.5 million in scholarships to more than 8,500 New Haven Public High School graduates who have the academic ability and financial need to enroll in colleges, universities, and other post-secondary programs in the 60 years since our founding in 1959. High school students in New Haven who are motivated can break the pattern of scarce chances with the aid of the New Haven Scholarship Fund.

About The Scholarship

At New Haven, our main goal is to award scholarships to deserving New Haven students who have the greatest academic need and financial needs.

How To Reapply

Although the scholarship’s original goal was to aid students in getting through their first year, we realized that students also needed assistance as they worked toward achieving their objectives. Given that we don’t offer multi-year prizes, multi-year rewards are one-year scholarships. The sum depends on how much funding is available and how many candidates there are. For a fresh award, you must apply every year. The following requirements must be met by candidates in order to be considered:

Eligibility

1. You must have been awarded a New Haven Scholarship Fund scholarship during your final year of high school.

2. In the year the award is given, the recipient will be enrolled in college or a trade or technical school

3. Must provide evidence of financial need.

Application Requirements

All of the following must be submitted:

1. A cover sheet containing the following details:

Name, current address, contact information (phone and email), and

I went to school last year.

Your place of study for the upcoming academic year

Student ID #

The year you’ll be starting (sophomore, junior, senior)

2. The Registrar’s Office transcript of grades (does not have to have a seal and it can be student generated.) Please make sure to send a transcript from your prior school if you moved schools.

3. A copy of your family’s IRS 1040 tax return from the prior year (pp. 1 & 2 only).

Submit the Student Aid Report from the FAFSA or the Alternate Income Verification Form if your family does not file 1040.

• If you have received a financial package from the college, attach a copy of it.

Future Year

• Describe your efforts to obtain financial aid from the government, your college, or other sources. How have you tried to apply for financial help for the upcoming year?

4. A one- to a two-page essay discussing your recent year(s), major, and future aspirations.

(Since we like to perceive you as a person, let your writing style reflect that.)

Winning Your Prize

The scholarship award payment is made in two installments:

The NHSF needs to receive proof of enrollment* twice.

NOTE: Until we are certain that you are enrolled, no money will be sent.

(As you can see, we can’t blindly send checks to schools without verification that the student is there. Sometimes students change their minds about what schools they’re going to, decide to work for a semester, etc.)

Any ONE of the following is included in the school’s “proof of enrollment”:

• Certificate verifying enrolment

• Bill generated by the school

• Student schedule and billing statement

• Letter of certification of enrollment;

• A copy of any email-received internal billing statement or invoice from the school.

Any proof of enrollment document must:

Include the student’s complete name and

2. The pupil’s institution ID number.
