As an investment in our upcoming leaders and philanthropists, the Rotary Foundation and clubs offer scholarships for undergraduate and graduate study.

Rotary Club
In 1947, the Rotary Club of Tucson started making an effort to help college-level students. Emory Hyde had the concept for the program. The program was launched under his direction with rewards of $200 per semester for students chosen by the Scholarship Committee. The students chosen were among a group of applicants recommended to the committee by the University of Arizona’s Scholarship Office. The scholarships were initially only offered for a single year. As long as academic conditions were maintained, the Scholarships were eventually awarded for four years. The initial candidates were referred to the university by high school principals. The checks they received were the sole interaction the award-winning pupils had with our club. At first, milk bottles were used to collect money at the weekly meetings. In 1971, tin cups had taken the place of milk bottles. Members’ private contributions also supported the initiative.
According to Roger Harwell, the program’s director, the Scholarship Program is currently the Rotary Club of Tucson’s longest-running charitable/community support initiative. For many years, a club representative attended each high school award ceremony and presented the prize. During this period, we awarded $1,000 to one student from each Tucson-area high school graduating class. After the award ceremony, the students left for college and received their financial aid, and we never saw them again.
