Future leaders and the continuous constructive development of African American youth are priorities for the Jack and Jill of America Foundation.
High school graduates who plan to enroll and maintain full-time status at a recognized, four-year postsecondary institution beginning in the autumn of the year and are pursuing a bachelor’s degree are eligible for the Jack and Jill of America Foundation’s National Scholarship Program.

Wittenberg University
A group of pastors from the English Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Ohio, which had earlier split from the recently formed German-speaking Evangelical Lutheran Joint Synod of Ohio and the Other States, founded Wittenberg College (it became Wittenberg University in 1957) in 1845.
The college’s primary creator and first president was the Rev. Ezra Keller, a German American clergyman of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Its initial goal was to train clergy, and its theological division was the Hamma School of Divinity. Unlike the nearby Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, it taught classes in English rather than German, with one of its principal goals being to “Americanize” Lutherans.
At the start of the academic year, there were eight pupils in the first class; by the end, there were seventy-one. Classes were held in Springfield, Ohio, at a church on donated grounds with a faculty of one professor and two tutors. The National Road, which connects the eastern cities of Baltimore and Cumberland, Maryland, to the west in the Illinois Country, and finally to the territorial seat of Vandalia, close to the Mississippi River, was the reason that city was chosen.
Black people were accepted to college the year after women were inducted, in 1874. The university where Martin Luther famously nailed his Ninety-five Theses to the church door on October 31, 1517, is the inspiration for the name of the college. That university is the historic University of Wittenberg in Wittenberg, Germany. A formal collaboration between the university and the German city was established in 1993.
When the management at Wittenberg University disregarded the faculty personnel board and denied faculty member tenure, the American Philosophical Association censured the university in 1995. American Association of Institution Professors (AAUP) censured the university once more in 2021 for terminating two tenured faculty members and eight academic programs without, in the AAUP’s perspective, respecting faculty rights.

About The Scholarship
The future leadership of African American students is a priority for the Jack and Jill of America Foundation through its scholarship. The Foundation supports the development of future generations of African American leaders by offering programs with an emphasis on early childhood development, health and wellness, financial literacy, and education.
For the academic year 2023–2024, the Jack and Jill of America Foundation – Jacqueline Moore Bowles Scholarship will award need-based financial aid to service-minded African American college students majoring in communications who have accrued at least 60 hours of volunteer work in their communities. The award money will be given out during the academic year 2023-2024.
Eligibility
1. Candidate must Be an American citizen or lawful permanent resident who is African American.
2. Be currently categorized as a freshman, sophomore, or junior in college.
3. Enroll in any authorized 4-year college or university full-time as an incoming sophomore, junior, or senior for the 2023–2024 academic year.
4. Have a Communications major.
5. Possess a 3.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or higher.
6. Have finished performing community service for at least 60 hours between June 2023 and May 2024. No exceptions will be made to the service hour requirement.
7. Have submitted a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and have an institution-verified financial need that has been proven to be unmet.

To be eligible, applicants must satisfy all prerequisites and deadlines. Scholarships worth between $1,500 and $2,500 will be used to pay for room and board and tuition.
High-achieving undergraduates with financial needs who wish to pursue a degree from a four-year institution authorized by the United States of America are eligible for this undergraduate scholarship program. The scholarship can pay for the student’s tuition, living costs, books, and other educational costs. Depending on the amount of cash available, different awards may be given.
