The Albert Shanker Scholarship Program

The UFT is the union that represents teachers, paraprofessionals, guidance counselors, and other educators in the city’s public schools. We think that education is the key to leading a fruitful life and that our students have what it takes to pursue their education despite obstacles in their personal and financial lives.

Scholarship Sponsor

United Federation Of Teachers (UFI)

Our 1969-launched scholarship program was given a new name in 1997 to honor Albert Shanker. He was the New York City teacher elected to lead our national affiliate, the American Federation of Teachers, and this union. Because he cared so much about kids and wanted them to have access to excellent educations, Albert Shanker more than anyone else elevated education to the top of America’s political agenda. We are happy that these scholarships will allow hundreds of our students to attend college each year, many of whom will go on to achieve success.

About The Scholarship

The United Federation of Teachers is pleased to provide academically outstanding and financially qualified students from New York City public schools with almost $1 million in undergraduate and graduate scholarships each year. Living examples of how excellence may flourish in New York City schools can be found among scholarship winners. They are able to acquire academic distinction thanks to their diligence and the commitment of all the teachers that collaborated with them.

College Bursaries

Every year, the Fund provides more than 200 deserving graduates of public high schools with college scholarships. Each scholarship is worth $5,000, or $1,250 per year for four years of education. Students who plan to enroll in an authorized public or private college or university are eligible to apply for Albert Shanker College Scholarships.

The UFT Albert Shanker awards nine scholarships to undergraduate winners who continue their graduate studies full-time right after college. For individuals seeking master’s degrees, there are six scholarships for $2,000 over two semesters, one scholarship worth $8,000 over four years for medical school, one scholarship worth $6,000 over three years for law school, and one scholarship worth $6,000 over three years for education.

Awards From The Albert Shanker College Scholarship Fund

On June 7 at the UFT headquarters in Manhattan, the 53rd annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony & Reception presented 189 high school seniors with $5,000 Albert Shanker college scholarships. Academically superior New York City public high school seniors and post-graduate students are eligible for the scholarships. Additionally, eight graduate students were given scholarships.

The Undergraduate Scholarship

The program is only available to senior public high school students in New York City who will graduate from an alternative, academic, or vocational school or who will get an equivalency diploma from a public evening school or a New York City Board of Education alternative educational program. Students also need to be leaders in their schools and communities and have strong academic standing. Additionally, all applicants must be qualified for and submit an application for federal financial help (a Pell Grant).

Who Is Eligible To Apply?

For the graduate grants, only recipients of UFT undergraduate college scholarships are qualified. Graduate scholarship recipients must also have a strong academic record, exhibit leadership abilities, and satisfy family financial standards.

How About Financial Qualification?

Students must fall within the Albert Shanker College Scholarship Fund’s maximum family income limits in order to be eligible for the UFT Albert Shanker scholarships. The number of dependents in the family determines the maximum levels. Page 4 of the scholarship application instructions contain additional information and precise income information.

Students must provide verifiable evidence of their family’s income, which must include the income of their guardians, parents, stepparents, or any other adults who have taken on the applicant’s legal obligations. Tax returns and other official documentation are required by the Scholarship Fund as evidence of household income. It is crucial to keep track of all of your income, even non-taxable sources like public assistance, child support, Social Security, and pensions for veterans.

An applicant will also need to properly substantiate their family’s income if they have relatives who reside abroad.

How Are The Winners Chosen?

The Fund’s Director appoints an unbiased committee to choose the winners. A high school student’s average and class rank account for almost two-thirds of all college scholarships. The remaining prizes are determined using the applicants’ remarks, recommendations, and evaluations of their potential and academic standing.

How Are The Awards Funded?
