The Gates Foundation gave the University of Cambridge US$210 million in October 2000, creating the Gates Cambridge Trust. This continues to be the single-largest gift to a UK university.
All facets of the Gates Cambridge Scholarship program are managed by the Trust. It has a Board of 10 eminent Trustees that meets twice a year to deliberate on the program’s overall strategic direction.
Two of the Trustees were appointed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, while the remaining eight were chosen by the University.
The Provost (CEO) oversees all operational facets of the Trust’s work with the assistance of a Director of Finance, a Programme Director, and a small administrative team.
About The Scholarship
With a $210 million gift, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation started the Gates Cambridge Scholarships in 2000 to help deserving graduate students attend the University of Cambridge.
The scholarship is one of the most renowned and competitive in the world, with awards going to about 1.3% of applications in recent years.
The donation is the largest ever made to a British university, and it supports the most esteemed postgraduate program at the institution.
Each scholarship involves money for both academic and professional growth in addition to covering the cost of a postgraduate degree at the University of Cambridge.
More than 200 Gates Cambridge Scholars are now enrolled in academic programs, and more than 2000 students from more than 110 countries have earned the scholarship.
One of the most prominent international scholarships in the world is the Gates Cambridge Scholarship. Outstanding candidates from outside the UK are given scholarships to attend the University of Cambridge full-time for a postgraduate degree in any field that is offered.
Each class of Gates Cambridge Scholars is typically made up of two PhD students and three one-year scholars. The Gates Cambridge Trust chooses its scholars using a three-stage process. During the U.S. or the global round, prospective students must submit an application to study for an eligible degree at the University of Cambridge. Following the first application, qualified candidates for the scholarship are ranked and recommended by each academic department at the University of Cambridge. The best candidates for postgraduate studies in the department are called departmental nominees. The Gates Cambridge Trust divides the list of departmental nominees into broad subject categories before sending it to the shortlisting committees.
