The largest barrier to getting higher education for many students is cost. The Gen and Kelly Tanabe Scholarship Program provide worthy students of all ages with scholarships that can be used to pay for college or graduate school in an effort to assist in removing this barrier.
SCHOLARSHIP SPONSOR
TANABE FOUNDATION
Since 2001, when the first scholarship was given out, the scholarship program has continued to give out funds to assist students in covering their educational expenses.
Since the Gen and Kelly Tanabe Scholarship is merit-based, financial necessity is not taken into account. An impartial group of judges chooses the winner, and they base their decision mostly on the caliber of the personal statement that was submitted. Past academic accomplishments (such as grades and scores on standardized tests) are not taken into account. The intention is to level the playing field so that applicants have full control over their submissions and are not given a financial or academic advantage or disadvantage.
After Gen and Kelly Tanabe, award-winning authors of 14 books on entrance and scholarships, the Scholarship Program bears their names. All of the Ivy League schools accepted the Tanabes jointly, and they received more than $100,000 in merit-based scholarships to enable them to graduate debt-free from Harvard. They give speeches about college planning across the country and have provided authoritative sources for publications including USA Today, The New York Times, CNN, and U.S. News & World Report.
