SCHOLARSHIP SPONSORS (ALBERT ROOTHBERT/ANTOINE ROOTHBERT)
ALBERT ROOTHBERT
A long-assimilated German Jewish family that had lived in Frankfurt, Germany, since 1504 gave birth to Albert Roothbert there in 1874.
Through the dramatic events that shaped the early 20th century, Albert worked as an investment banker.
He retired from his firm and his corporate directorships in 1925 when he was 50 years old, and his life became more focused on fusing the art of living with a great desire for social improvement.
At the age of 63, Albert wed Toni von Horn in 1937. The Roothbert Fund was started by the two in 1958 with the intention of finding people whose acts appear to be motivated by spiritual values.
ANTONIE VON HORN ROOTHBERT
Antonie “Toni” von Horn Roothbert, one of the first female commercial photographers of this century, was also a social activist.
Toni von Horn made a name for herself as one of New York’s busiest and most well-known society and fashion photographers. She establishes herself as a prominent professional during a time that many consider being among photography’s most dynamic and dramatic periods thanks to her consistent editorial work at Vogue, Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, her repetitious shoots for the most coveted advertising accounts like Bergdorf Goodman and the soap companies, and the portraiture conducted from her studios.
Numerous spiritual leaders and alternative faiths, including Buddhism, Theosophy, Krishnamurti, Rudolf Steiner, and perhaps (probably surely!) others, piqued Toni’s genuine curiosity or at least gave them the benefit of the doubt. She was drawn to Meher Baba after World War II because of his mission to unite all religions. She was undoubtedly at ease contrasting or discussing the virtues of several religions, but it is also difficult to pinpoint which one was most in tune with her own inner soul.
ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP
