Founded in 1850 as a free university, the University of Sydney is now a well-known name in higher education.
The University was established on the two guiding principles of accepting all religions and admitting students based only on academic ability. No matter their religious affiliation, pupils were admitted on the first principle. The second is the idea that students “matriculated” into universities by doing well on academic tests.
In the middle of the nineteenth century, both concepts challenged conventional university models and offered fresh perspectives on universities. They were modified by our founders to build a university that would suit the colonial circumstances of New South Wales. They were born out of serious discussions about the purpose of universities in Britain and Europe.
In order to prepare for the writing of Australia’s First: A History of the University of Sydney (2 vols. ), the University of Sydney started an oral history project in the 1970s. jointly published in 1991 and 1996 by the university and Hale and Irmonger). Prof. K. Cable, Prof. W. F. Connell, and Dr. U. Bygott interviewed former university employees and students from the middle of the 1970s to the early 1990s. These interviews were captured on cassette cassettes, which the university has been keeping for the past 30 years or so. The project was reintroduced in the early 2000s by the University Historian, Professor Julia Horne, and soon you will be able to hear from the University’s trailblazing faculty and employees.
Students and employees at the University of Sydney joined in the AIF and other services when World War I started in July 1914. From working in the medical corps and the artillery on the Front Line to being munitions workers and linguists at Top Secret locations in Britain. Additionally serving in World War II were university employees and students. To learn more about this history, the University Archives and University Historian are collaborating on the digital project “Beyond 1939: War and Reconstruction.” The Chancellor’s Committee has graciously donated funds to our endeavor.
