The Arts of Life is a progressive art studio that offers instruction from professionals in a variety of vocational and daily life skills. It is an alternate-day habilitation program for people with developmental impairments.

Arts of Life

A Chicago-based nonprofit organization called Arts of Life offers artists with intellectual and developmental impairments access to studio space, materials, professional development assistance, and exhibition opportunities. When it was established in Chicago in 2000, Arts of Life was the first program to offer persons with developmental disabilities employment in the arts.

It features two 6,000-square-foot studio and gallery sites. The North Shore studio is located at 1963 Johns Drive in Glenview, Illinois, while the Chicago studio is situated at 2010 West Carroll Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. Painting, drawing, fiber art, sculpture, music, and performance are just a few of the several media that the studio’s artists work in. By 2021, the studio had assisted and supported over 60 artists.

Staff members and volunteers assist the artists and provide training in artistic disciplines and career advancement.

It was created as an alternative to the restricted career opportunities provided in sheltered workshops by Denise Fisher, the manager of a residential program for adults with disabilities, and Veronica “Ronnie” Cuculich, a resident of the program.

Arts of Life describes itself as an organization whose goals are to encourage artistic expression, assist artists in creating communities, and advance self-respect.

Artists and staff from Arts of Life participate in group decision-making on a variety of program issues, such as programming and staffing. Additionally, the studio helps artists with marketing and showing their work.

The state of Illinois, private contributors, grants, and foundations all contribute to the funding of Arts of Life.

In addition to the MacArthur Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Illinois Arts Council, the Arts and Business Council of Chicago, the Chicago Community Trust, and the West Town Chamber of Commerce, the organization has partnerships with sponsoring companies, professional artists, service providers, and brands. It also hosts a range of group performances and fundraisers.

The arts are Columba Bush’s life’s work. As Florida’s first lady, she toured classrooms all around the state and saw firsthand the profound impact that the arts have on children’s lives. Her favorite part of meeting high school kids was finding out more about their aspirations and preferred career routes. So, in order to assist high school seniors in pursuing their artistic aspirations after graduation, she founded Arts for Life In 1999 with the backing of Governor Bush and numerous other arts supporters.

Since then, more than 575 scholarships have been given out by Arts for Life! to Florida students who want to follow their artistic goals. Former scholarship winners frequently went on to pursue careers as actors, actresses, musicians, dancers, artists, and art educators.

About The Scholarship

Florida high school students’ artistic and creative abilities are celebrated by Arts for Life! Every year, 25 Florida high school seniors who succeed academically and artistically in dance, theater, music, or the visual arts are given $1,000 scholarships through Arts for Life!

More than 575 talented high school seniors have received scholarships through the program since it was established in 1999 by former First Lady Columba Bush.
