GUIDELINES FOR A SUCCESSFUL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION
WAI has given out more than $14.5 million in scholarships over the past 30 years. After obtaining a WAI scholarship, thousands of WAI members have realized their aviation aspirations or advanced their aviation or aerospace careers.
The procedure is easy: Choose up to three scholarships to apply for, then complete the necessary application forms. But previous scholarship recipients will tell you that it pays to present your best self, pay attention to details, and submit an application package that genuinely distinguishes you. We’ve put together a Top Ten list of suggestions to get you going:
1. Become a member of Women in Aviation International! Numerous fields of aviation and aerospace are eligible for WAI scholarships. To be eligible for each award, you must be a member of Women in Aviation International by October 1, 2021. You do not need to be a pilot, an engineer, a student, or have advanced degrees.
2. Adhere to the guidelines and pay close attention to details. Make sure to carefully examine each scholarship’s requirements because they vary slightly from one another. You risk being disqualified if you don’t adhere to the guidelines for each scholarship, so keep that in mind.
• Are two one-page letters of recommendation required per the requirements? Send two letters if so. I’m done. None less.
• Is a transcript from your school required by the scholarship application? Is certification required? Make sure they are certified if they need to be.
• Must the essay be no more than 500 words? Keep in mind that the committee evaluating the scholarship applications is taking into account hundreds of applications. Your essay will be rejected if it doesn’t exactly match the specifications.
• Be sure to type your essay and any other application components.
• Include legible copies of your government licenses, ratings, logbooks, and other necessary materials if the scholarship’s requirements specify.
3—Spend time on your essay and share your unique narrative.
• Express yourself passionately and explain why you are the ideal candidate for the position.
• Avoid submitting an application that is universally applicable.
• This is your chance to address the scholarship selection panel. Help them get to know YOU, and make sure they sense your enthusiasm and drive.
4 — Be honest. Don’t embellish the truth or manipulate it in any way. No inflated claims. Period.
5. Finish the application procedure completely.
• Don’t leave any questions unanswered; complete them all!
• Submit all information and supporting documentation that has been required. You can be completely excluded from the scholarship if you fail to submit the necessary paperwork.
• Be sure to submit your entry along with all necessary paperwork and documentation.
