Texas University

Austin, Texas is home to the public research institution known as The University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin, UT, or Texas). The University of Texas System’s earliest institution was founded there in 1883. It is also the biggest institution in the system, with 3,133 teaching staff members, 11,075 graduate students, and 40,916 undergraduate students as of Fall 2021.

The university is a significant academic research hub, with $679.8 million in research expenses for the 2018 fiscal year.

In 1929, it became a member of the Association of American Universities. The university runs numerous ancillary research facilities, including the J. J. Pickle Research Campus and the McDonald Observatory, in addition to seven museums and seventeen libraries, including the LBJ Presidential Library and the Blanton Museum of Art. As of November 2020, the school had alumni, staff, or researchers who were associated with 13 Nobel Prize winners, 4 Pulitzer Prize winners, 2 Turing Award winners, 2 Fields Medal recipients, 2 Wolf Prize winners, and 2 Abel Prize winners. Additionally, the university has ties to three Primetime Emmy Award winners, and as of 2021, its former students and graduates have won 155 Olympic medals.

The Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas’ 1827 constitution contains the earliest reference to a public institution in Texas. The Mexican government did nothing despite the promise made in Title 6, Article 217 of the Constitution to develop public education in the arts and sciences. The Texas Congress ratified the Constitution of the Republic, which stated in Section 5 of its General Provisions that “It shall be the duty of Congress, as soon as circumstances will permit, to provide, by law, a general system of education,” after Texas won its independence from Mexico in 1836.

The Texas Congress referred “An Act to Establish the University of Texas” to a special committee on April 18, 1838, but no further action was taken after it was not reported back. The Texas Congress decided to reserve fifty leagues of land—roughly 288,000 acres (117,000 ha)—for the construction of a publicly funded university on January 26, 1839. Additionally, 40 acres (16 ha) in Austin, the new capital, were set aside and given the name “College Hill.” (Informally, the University is referred to as “Forty Acres” as a whole. The initial 40 acres were located between Guadalupe and Speedway and 21st and 24th Streets.)
