When Jim Thompson was employed as a teacher assistant at the Behavioral Learning Center in 1971, he became aware of the need for a company devoted to fostering a positive child sports culture (BLC). Children at BLC, an elementary school devoted to helping kids with serious behavioral and emotional problems, were constantly encouraged to succeed. Thompson saw how underprivileged children flourished when their emotional tanks were filled with constant positive reinforcement. In the Roble Gym at Stanford University, Jim Thompson founded PCA in 1998. Since that time, over the course of more than 20 years, PCA has developed from a modest local non-profit into a powerful national organization that annually hosts thousands of workshops and collaborates with some of the biggest groups, professional sports teams, and national governing bodies.

Mission

To alter the culture of youth sports so that all kids, irrespective of their social or economic situation, can participate in and benefit from a positive youth sports experience.

This organization serves as a catalyst for a positive youth sports culture. With programming that is research-based and intended to have an effect at three levels in a youth sports organization or school, PCA ensures that sports are “done well.”

• Character building and enhanced life skills are experienced by youth.

• COACHES adopt a more upbeat attitude and concentrate more on utilizing sports to impart life lessons.

• The cultures of YOUTH SPORTS ORGANIZATIONS AND SCHOOLS change for the better, and everyone engaged has more fun.

PCA thinks that all young people may gain by participating in a pleasant, welcoming sports environment that fosters character development, fosters social and emotional skills, and prepares them for competition and everyday life. After working for more than two decades, PCA transformed from a small, local nonprofit into a powerful, federal agency that offers programming in all 50 states, interacting with thousands of organizations across the nation and having a positive impact on millions of young athletes annually. Over 20,000 live group sessions have now been delivered by PCA in collaboration with roughly 3,500 schools and youth sports organizations across the country, reaching over 20 million young people.

PCA’s Goals

Imagine a world where every young person has a pleasant youth sports experience with a coach who encourages them to improve both on and off the field.
